Does he still care about me?

Ive lost all hope today, my ex called on Monday about something practical and we talked, he answered texts aftter this about a new job he had told me about. He called again yesterday after I text to remind him about a letter I need him to put through my door and we talked . . . today hes not answering texts and i feel like all hope has drained out of my life again. Im clinging on to every little bit of contact in the hope that one day he will come back. One friend thinks he still cares (and he has said this himself) another says to be careful with my heart as our relationship was quite one sided and hes probably using me as a sounding board while he gets his life back on track. I don't know what to think, I miss him desperately, I just wish we could get back together or I could move on for good ;o(
