How did Adolf Hitler convince people to go along with his genocide ideas.?

I know that Goebbels was very good at propaganda but I still find it crazy to think that you could convince an entire country that mass murder is okay, even with excellent propaganda. The American government can't even convince everybody that capitol punishment is okay, let alone genocide. Were the German people back then all evil or what? How did they think it was okay?
